The pain in the right side it is an annoying condition that can cause great concern to those who are affected by it but, fortunately, in most cases it resolves spontaneously and without particularly important treatments.

But what can the pain in the right side depend on?

What is the pain in the right side

The first thing you need to understand is that the pain in the right side it is not a disease, but only a symptom that can distinguish different conditions.

In order to arrive at a correct diagnosis, it becomes important to share with your doctor not only the moment of its onset and its eventual evolution, but also its location: sometimes in fact the right side can correspond to the upper part of the abdomen, and that is, at the level of the last ribs, or in the lower part, in correspondence with the iliac crest.

What is on the right side

A demonstration of how numerous the causes of pain in the right side, it is enough to recall how numerous the organs are found here.

In fact, they find space in the upper right side, for example, the liver, the gallbladder, the duodenum, the head of the pancreas, the upper part of the right kidney, the right adrenal gland, the hepatic flexure of the colon.

On the lower right side there are instead the first section of the large intestine, the vermiform appendix, the ascending colon, the right ovary and the fallopian tube (in women), the right ureter.

Obviously, these organs will have to add muscles and bones, present in that area. In short, many components that could be responsible or co-responsible for our discomfort. So what are the causes of pain in the right side?

Causes of pain in the right side

Pain in the right side located in the upper part of the abdomen can have very different causes from pain in the right side located in the lower part of the same. It is therefore useful to divide the determinants in a more orderly manner.

As for the main conditions that can induce the onset of pain in the right side in the upper abdomen, we mention gallstones, duodenal ulcer, the presence of gas in the belly, kidney stones, pyelonephritis, pneumonia, food poisoning, musculoskeletal trauma, neuralgia affecting the intercostal nerves.

THE gallstones, among the most frequent hypotheses, are small solid compounds, consisting of cholesterol and calcium salts, and they are certainly one of the widespread pathologies of the biliary tract, often associated with abscesses, polyps, gallbladder tumors, and so on. Normally, gallstones are responsible for particularly intense pain when they obstruct the bile flow: the pain can be persistent dull, or sharp and oscillating. Sometimes it can spread to the back and be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, light stools.

On the other hand, as regards the main conditions that can induce the onset of pain in the left side in the lower part of the abdomen, we cite appendicitis, an ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cyst, constipation, intestinal obstruction, irritable bowel, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, abdominal hernia, psoas muscle abscess, rectus abdominal muscle hematoma.

In this case, one of the most frequent hypotheses is theappendicitis, such as inflammation of the appendix. Typically, appendicitis originates from internal obstruction of the vermiform appendix, resulting from the stagnation of undigested material, or from the hypertrophy of the appendicular lymphatic follicles. Among the main symptoms are malaise, mild fever, abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhea.

In women, however, it is possible that the pain is the result of one ectopic pregnancy, or a pregnancy that takes place outside the uterus or in an inadequate location in the uterus. This is typically the most common cause of right flank pain in pregnant women. The pain can manifest itself in different ways, being able to take on a sharp or dull character. Other symptoms that may accompany this situation are bleeding from the vagina, a feeling of dizziness, pelvic pain, nausea or fainting.

Right flank pain diagnosis

The diagnosis procedure carried out by the doctor, which leads to the identification of the causes of pain in the right side, begins with a thorough physical examination and a careful medical history. Depending on the circumstances, you can proceed with an ultrasound, an X-ray, blood and urine tests, faeces, endoscopy, and so on.

Right flank pain treatment

As can be guessed, the right flank pain treatment it depends on the triggering causes.

For example, if the cause is Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis, the doctor might prescribe drug treatments, as well as a change in eating habits. Surgery is rarely carried out.

If, on the other hand, the cause of the pain in the right side is linked to the presence of severe kidney stones, or from an abdominal hernia or ovarian cyst, then the treatment is usually surgical.

A more contained pain in the right side (but also in the left side), in a lower position and towards the lumbar region, in correspondence with the kidneys, can also be caused by renella.

Furthermore, in the presence of conditions of bacterial origin, as occurs in the case of pneumonia, the treatment consists in the administration of antibiotic drugs. If, on the other hand, there is trauma to the ribs as underlying the pain in the right side, the treatments will mainly be aimed at promoting pain tolerance, based mainly on rest and the intake of painkillers.

Considering the wealth of causes that may be underlying the pain in the right side, our suggestion can only be to seek the advice of your referring doctor, and undergo diagnostic tests to help identify the reasons for the discomfort.
