With the introduction of law no. 242 of 2 December 2016, entered into force on 14 January 2017, even in Italy it is possible to legally grow light cannabis, that is hemp that has very low concentrations of THC and, therefore, not able to generate significant alterations in the perception of those who use it.
While respecting some particularly strict requirements, mainly referring to the need to make each phase of the sowing and distribution of cannabis products adequately traceable, it is therefore already possible - in this introduction - to state that you can grow hemp whose content of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is less than 0.2%.
But there are some incentives for cannabis cultivation?
The incentives to grow cannabis
It is the same law n. 242/2016, in art. 6, has sanctioned the availability of incentives up to 6, has sanctioned the availability of incentives up to 700,000 euros per year aimed at stimulating the growth of the legal hemp sector in Italy, not only from the point of view of production in the strict sense, but also that of the structural conditions in order to favor a consistent absorption of the product.
Precisely for this reason, the law has chosen to approach the possibility of providing incentives rather broadly, allowing access to these bonuses for a wide range of purposes.
In principle, those who start a farm may be entitled to exemption from contributions for the first three years, and a level of contribution that in subsequent periods will drop from 65% to 50%. Other tax incentives against the cultivation of legal cannabis they can then come from other non-state sources, such as regional regulations that could make the cultivation and marketing of products deriving from such cultivation more favorable.
Furthermore, it cannot be excluded that the company that develops particularly innovative hemp-based products may be qualified as start up innovative, and therefore be registered in the relative register, with what follows on the possibility of obtaining further tax advantages and loans expressly reserved for this particular corporate category.
What the law provides
But what exactly does the law provide towards all those who wish to legally grow hemp in our country?
Law no. 242/2016 of which we have spoken several times in the last few lines has introduced some more generous rules towards this sector, establishing - for example - that:
those who want to grow legal hemp in Italy he no longer has the obligation to communicate to the authorities when he starts to cultivate, but must only keep the seed labels up to 12 months after purchase, in order to allow the carrying out of the appropriate traceability checks;
the police can carry out checks, on a single sample, in the presence of the grower. Only in the event that this control reveals that the threshold of 0.2% of THC is exceeded, can they then order the seizure and destruction of the plantation.
In some cases it is also possible to proceed with the cultivation of seeds with THC above this threshold, but below 0.6%. Of course, we advise all those interested to contact an expert in order to share in more detail what to do.
Tips on how to grow legal cannabis
Legal cannabis plants are certainly very versatile and can therefore adapt quite well to different soil and climate conditions.
In general, however, it is good to remember how the plants suffer a lot from water stagnation, which could not only block their favorable development, but also determine the presence of conditions that could seriously jeopardize their survival, such as chlorosis.
For the rest, it is sufficient to place ordinary attention on the ground, more focused at the time of sowing and germination, considering that the seed requires a moist soil in order to germinate (the sowing depth is max 2 centimeters, with distance of the seedlings about 15 - 20 centimeters). Subsequently the plant will be able to resist even to conditions of greater drought.
Having said that, under normal conditions the growing plant does not need specific irrigation or "fertilizer" attention: the release of leaves at the end of the cycle is in fact able to naturally fertilize the soil, thus allowing to record a better production in the subsequent crops. This does not mean that in some cases, especially if the soil is not particularly rich in those nutrients that the plant needs, it may be necessary to intervene with special supplements.
Finally, remember that sowing should be carried out between March and April, in order to obtain a harvest in August, after about ten days after the flowering of the male plants.
We hope that this initial information has been useful in improving knowledge about the cultivation of light cannabis and on incentives for the cultivation of legal hemp. More information can be obtained through the main industry associations.
